Dear Cousins,
I have just made the reservation for next year for the Reunion. They would not accept it more than a year in advance, because previous users had priority over us. I thought we were going to get April 28 weekend, but what we got was May 4-5-6, 2007. The bluebonnets will be gone, but so will the bike riders and a lot of other things, so I think it's a good date. It also has a beautiful swimming pool, with a lifeguard, and the weather might cooperate better in May for swimming.
Our location is Camp Lone Star, which is across the road from Monument Hill, down a country road a couple of miles, a truly stunning place, with wonderful facilities. I'm sending you a file with pictures of the place, and a description of the facilities. It can also be accessed online at
www.lomt.com/camplonestar.html.It's run by the Lutheran Church.
I have discovered that many of our cousins have been to Camp Lone Star as children, and they will be pleasantly surprised! The Camp has, in recent years, built the Johnson Retreat Center, which and we have reserved, along with the Selah House. Both have rooms with queen beds as well as bunk beds (which are twin-size, not cots). It has a total of 26 rooms there. I will also reserve standard rooms at the River Valley, the Executive Inn, and others, but they won't take reservations yet. As far as I can tell, there is no major conflict that weekend.
Peter Wilrich is organizing a group of the German cousins to come to Texas and New York. He doesn't know yet how many it will be, but we will want to alert our cousins in San Antonio, Austin, Houston and Dallas, so we can show them some Texas hospitality. Maybe they can even round up some cattle!
This is a very different concept from our other Reunions. It will be much more comfortable for our older people and our families with babies and toddlers.
There will be less commuting, and if anybody needs a rest, they can walk a few feet to their room. I hope we can work out the baby monitor frequencies, so we know which baby is waking up. There are also lots of activities for children, and people to help supervise, so parents can relax and talk to each other. There are two main rooms, as well as two smaller rooms, one of which can be closed off for a quieter meeting. We can set up our memorabilia displays on Friday night, and leave them up all the time.
I think the cost will work out to be close to the same as before, for those who stayed in motels. The day cost might be more. We can probably work this out.
I want to have a meeting fairly soon, so we can start planning long in advance.
I hope we can arrange to meet in LaGrange, so those who want to see the facility can go out there. The young lady in charge, Clare, says she can show us around. (Harry and I did this after the last Reunion.)
The Schencks are fine with this date. I will also contact the owner of the Franziska Vogt house, because she wanted to do something for the next Reunion, like a small social event. You may remember, the McCrarys did that a few years ago.
In the meantime, we need to work on our mailing list. Send me some new addresses, especially email addresses. Also, tell all your families to SAVE THE DATE! Also, start talking to the families with children, encouraging them to come and bring their kids. It might be fun for the older kids to share some of the bunk rooms, so they can get to know each other better.
